Context

Before the coming of SABRE, CBRD, PM and the Motorway Archive Trust, this volume was THE reference to the history of the motorway network. Known by its author, Charlesworth, it manages to steer a path between engineer-speak and the common person, and is probably still the most readable book of its type.

It's not the largest book, so doesn't go into too much depth in any one topic, but is still well worth having - even if there are some factual errors that have crept into the text.

Contents of note

  • Includes short guides to each major motorway with planning and construction information
  • Short guides to the plans in each major conurbation in England
  • The development of motorway maintenance techniques
